A dental crown essentially serves as a tooth-shape “cap” placed over a damaged tooth, aiming to restore its shape, size and strength while also enhancing its appearance. With proper care, it can be used for long periods of time. Dental crowns can be crafted from various materials including:

  • Ceramic: Offers a better match to the natural colour of teeth when compared to other types, making it suitable for front teeth, albeit potentially more brittle.
  • Metal: Highly durable and long-lasting, however its colour can contrast with the natural shade of teeth.
  • Porcelain fused to meta (PFM): Offers a more robust bond than porcelain alone, however it is subjected to visual limitations .

Dental Bridge

Dental bridges are designed to fill the void left by one or more absent teeth, enhancing chewing comfort and speech clarity. Dental bridges also evenly distribute bite forces, stopping adjacent teeth from moving out of place, while also preserving facial contours.

Typically, a dental bridge consists of 3 or more crowns. However, fitting a porcelain bridge requires reducing the size of the adjacent teeth on both sides. If the neighbouring teeth are healthy and stable, dental implants would be an excellent option in order to avoid affecting the adjacent teeth.

Why Do We Need Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns/bridges are not only a restorative solution, but also an effective preventive measure. They are used to:

    • Protect a weak tooth from breaking or hold together parts of a cracked tooth.
    • Restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down.
    • Cover and support a tooth with a large filling.
    • Hold a dental bridge in place.
    • Cover misshaped or severely discoloured teeth.
